So today Jon, Christina & I took five animals to a nursing home for National Nursing Home Week or NNHW as I like to call it. We took a mosaic chinchilla, a lionhead rabbit, a guinea pig, a tiger striped kitten (who was bought while we were there) & an American Eskimo puppy. The puppy, of course, was the main attraction for everyone. It was really good to see how much happier the people were while we were there. I was happy that we could bring joy into their lives. Although there were many parts of doing this that was really hard for me. There was an older man there that was with his wife (I'm assuming) and he was sitting in the chair next to her and she couldn't really move or say anything. There were a lot of memories that came back to me from when my mom was in a nursing home the last month of her life. When she couldn't speak, had no energy & couldn't move the right side of her body from where the cancer was spreading.
There were a couple times I actually had to hold back tears because I felt so bad for some people. Laura, who was the person who organized this with Night Stalkers, introduced us to her mom who was in there. She didn't answer any questions with words, just shakes of her head. I don't know if she can speak or not, but that was also hard to imagine working in the same place where your mom was living. Mainly just under the circumstances.
Laura's mother's roommate got to hold the puppy & while the puppy was licking her face, he got comfortable and laid his head down. What she said really got to me. She was talking to the puppy about how he would get to see his home before she would. She was saying it with such high spirits, too. Like she knew she was going to be there until she dies and she was okay with that. That was such strength that I had never seen in a person before & it really was amazing to see. Also very hard. There was also another lady who was lying in a bed & while petting the puppy she said, "I've always wanted a dog, but I never had the chance to have one."
I'm very thankful for Star because I told her I was having a hard time at the nursing home. She said that she wanted to be there for me when I needed strength. Yep, she's pretty much the most wonderful person ever.
It's not just because I have a soft spot for old people and how nice & honest they can be. But some of the people there were just so kind & happy that we were there. I really am glad that I had the chance to do this today. I've helped out at nursing homes before, but never with animals. I hope that the staff there are as kind as the ones that helped my mom. Those are the people who have a huge effect on lives. Not just the patients or residents, but their families as well. The staff in the IUPUI hospital where my mom was all had a part in writing wonderful things about my mom in a book that was given to me. It was great to see how much people care about a complete stranger and they're just doing their job. But I know you become attached to the people there just as I become attached to the animals I work with.
Okay, that's all. I just wanted to share that.
